Principal and founder of Steps Performing Arts, Rachelle Kellett has dedicated herself to teaching dance for the past 20 years. Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) classically trained, Rachelle studied under Angela Hill and Marita Lowden, and holds a Bachelor in Creative Arts from the Victorian College of the Arts where, in addition to visual arts, she honed her contemporary dance craft. She also completed further dance training at Broadway Dance Center, Steps on Broadway and Peridance Capezio Center in New York City. As a young dancer Rachelle enjoyed many successful solo and troupe eisteddfod performances, graduating to dance professionally for ten years. This experience culminated in a decision to found Steps Performing Arts in 1999.

As Principal of Steps, Rachelle now loves nothing more than to see her students grow from tiny three year olds into confident and focused young women and men. Hers is a holistic approach to dance teaching, and she relishes the opportunity to read and respond to each student’s individual needs in coming to class. Specialising in RAD classical ballet, character, contemporary, neo-classical, tap, jazz, funk, Stott Pilates®and Total Barre, Rachelle teaches various techniques to dancers of all ages and has played a critical role in many of her students becoming professional performers and dance teachers in their own right.

In other professional development, Rachelle commenced a Masters in Teaching in 2016. Complementing her dance practice, Rachelle is an avid photographer and can often be found with a camera in hand, capturing her students’ ephemeral moments of movement and colour, while documenting her creative vision.

Kyneton Studio

ANGELA HILL - ARAD, BA (Hons), RAD RTS

It is the thrill of seeing young people reach their potential that has driven Angela Hill to teach dance for an astounding 50 years. An Associate of the Royal Academy of Dance (ARAD), Angela was Rachelle Kellett’s childhood ballet teacher. In addition to teaching in Melbourne, Angela now works with Kyneton Steps students in classical, neo-classical and character ballet. Angela brings a wealth of knowledge to the curriculum at Steps, having enjoyed a celebrated career as a performer and teacher of the craft. In the 1970s, Angela appeared on popular Channel 9 variety television shows Hey Hey It’s Saturday and The Ernie Sigley Show, as well as performing pantomime seasons for six years with Pan Pow Productions at the Alexander Theatre.

While expecting consistency of effort from her students, Angela is also known for her fair and encouraging teaching style. This, along with her vast technical expertise, has cemented Angela’s position as the doyenne of classical ballet at Steps. In addition to her dance studies in the UK, Angela trained in Melbourne at the Leonie Scarlett School of Dance, the Marie Cumisky School of Ballet, the Paul Hammond School of Classical Ballet and at Kathleen Gorham’s School of Classical Ballet. A former Chairperson of the RAD Victorian/Tasmanian Regional Panel for five years, Angela offers further expertise in choreography, eisteddfod adjudication, student examination, and costume production and design.
